The affiliation of the Feira de Santana State University (UEFS) team to the National Project for a History of Brazilian Portuguese (PHPB), founded in 1997, coordinated by Professor Ataliba Teixeira de Castilho, took place through the Program for the Portuguese History ( PROHPOR ), from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) (www.prohpor.ufba.br), coordinated by Professor Rosa Virgínia Mattos e Silva. PHPB Bahia has 2 work teams, at UFBA and UEFS. The formation of PHPB-BA UEFS was due to the fact that several teachers who were members of PROHPOR also worked at UEFS, such as Ilza Maria de Oliveira Ribeiro, Dante Eustachio Lucchesi Ramacciotti, Tânia Conceição Freire Lobo, Silvia Rita Magalhaes de Olinda, Zenaide de Oliveira Novais Carneiro and Norma Lucia Fernandes de Almeida; since 2010, teacher Mariana Fagundes de Oliveira Lacerda and, from 2018, Huda da Silva Santiago, also UEFS teachers.
The UEFS team participated in all PHPB Annual Seminars, with an active agenda in their three fields of work.
With the vocation of studies dedicated to the hinterlands - As set out in the UEFS Institutional Development Plan (IDP) -, the UEFS Team started the agenda in 1997, continuing with the preparation of the project in 1998, Contributions to the constitution of a text bank and a database for the study of the history of Brazilian Portuguese from the 19th century. XVII to XX, coordinated by Ilza Maria de Oliveira Ribeiro and co-coordinated by Norma Lucia Fernandes de Almeida and Zenaide de Oliveira Novais Carneiro, funded by UEFS, whose agenda is the same as PHPB-Nacional. From 2000 to 2006, two participants, Norma Lucia Fernandes de Almeida and Zenaide de Oliveira Novais Carneiro developed specific doctoral agendas at the time of the retirement of Ilza Maria de Oliveira Ribeiro.
The Voices of the Sertão in Data Project: history, peoples and formation of Brazilian Portuguese (PB), from 2009 to 2011 (CNPq 401433 / 2009-9), was implemented with the purpose of promoting publications of linguistic studies, history of PB in the backlands and from corpora collections from previous unpublished phases and new samples, in partnership with the Portuguese language project in Bahia's semiarid region (1994-2017), aimed at the formation of speech samples from rural communities and urban areas of the Semiarid, with a bank of speech samples from the Bahian hinterlands.
The Voices of the Wilderness Data Bank, called DOHS, which gave rise to CE-DOHS, has made available all collection to PHPB, in version Word (1997-2016).
During the 1st Seminar of the Project for the History of Brazilian Portuguese, at USP, in 1997 (CASTILHO, 1998, p. 16), the ways of acting of the National Collective Project were established:
PHPB-National calendars are structured into three interrelated fields, namely:
The UEFS Team follows these agendas, focusing specifically on the large area of the Bahian hinterlands.
The region is home to a wealth of geo-environmental diversity, with important impacts on the occupation and domination process of Portuguese and other populations, which violently invaded the lands of the indigenous population throughout the colonial period. , decimating it almost completely. Santos (2010: 28), inspired by the conclusions of Caio Prado Junior (1999), shows that its dimensions, in the period from 1640 to 1750, include the interior of the Bahia captaincy, Piauí, north of the present state of Minas Gerais. Gerais and the riverside areas of the left side of the middle São Francisco, border areas treated as areas of friction between what he calls the unstable Luso-Brazilian territory and the native spaces. Still little studied, the hinterlands, until the nineteenth century, have been, in historiography, always seen through the contrast with the coast. Its native population, marked by linguistic diversity, was, until this period, treated generically as "Tapuias".
Carneiro and Almeida (2006) raised some vectors that guided the composition of the corpora, both oral and written, reflecting, in general, the dynamics of linguistic contact occurred in the Bahian hinterland. The historical contexts summarized by the authors are:
